Comic Land

This weekend will be interesting to say the least.

I was just talking with [info]aumshantih about the whole super-hero movie phenomenon. I hope another good one or two gets squeezed out before the fad dies...though from what I've heard things don't bode well for X-Men 3. This article talks about what the "next big thing" will be. Not a lot of details, but at least a good info dump. Here are the heroes/concepts mentioned:

Ghost Rider, Thor, Silver Surfer, Captain America, Namor, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, The History of Violence, and Aeon Flux.

I'd like to see some of these, but we'll see which actually survive the movie-making process and aren't completely awful.

Be well.

I find the "So You Want to Be a Superhero" reality show to be terribly amusing, as I've seen at least two or three parodies of the reality genre with that same idea already.

One of the best was in the 48 Hour Film Project last year.

I read that article too. imagine my chagrin that those gormless hack Wachowskis were involved in V for Vendetta. ugh. here comes another helping of shit soufflé.

Although I'd love to see Watchmen done, I won't hold my breath. That one has been in the works for Over a decade at this point.

Though I hear V for Vendetta is already in production?

I actually collected both Iron Man and Dr. Strange so I'd love to see either. I think FX could do a great job with Strange now. Capt. America is great as the leader of the Avengers, but lame solo. Thor could be really cool so long as the story line actually challenged him. Again, I think he might be better in an Avengers movie than solo..

I'd like to see some of them as well.

Two of these have already been made and are just awaiting release:
(1) I think A History of Violence is going to be good. Its directed by David Croneberg who is one of my favorites. I'm not sure it will be "next big thing". I'm expecting serious enough to turn away the casual viewer.
(2) Aeon Flux will probably be successful though I must say I'm disappointed in it since they are going for a more "conservative" costume for Charlize Theron.

Assessing "the next big thing" potential is actually quite easy:

Sure Fire Hit
(1) Ghost Rider: Sure Fire hit and can probably be made for a lower budget than say Iron Man.
(2) Watchmen
(3) V for Vendetta: Sure the buzz is bad... but unless the screen play is Spawn-level terrible... it will make its money back.
(4) Iron Man: It has blockbuster potential... but whose the villian suppose to be?

Hard or Impossible to Adapt:
(1) Thor: Impossible to Adapt.
(2) Silver Surfer: Impossible to Adapt.
(3) Doctor Strange: That would be interesting, but hard. His problem is that you need to introduce him and introduce Magic and its rules in the same movie. That's hard.
(4) Namor: Honestly I think they'd have better luck with an Aquaman movie.
(5) Nick Fury: As the Punisher showed... its hard to do a guy who doesn't wear a mask and isn't in costume.
(6) Black Panther: I think it could be interesting. It depends on how much of a dark badass they make him.

Too Campy:
(1) Captain America... unless it was set during WWII. That might actually be interesting.
(2) Wonder Woman... I like Wonder Woman, but she is a comic character.
